Unfortunately, multimedia can also be a platform for socially unacceptable behaviour. Child porn, for example, is hidden between all sorts of other digital material. Searching through hundreds of hours of video to detect and analyze child porn is very stressful and time consuming. Each contribution to the facilitation and acceleration of detecting child porn producers and finding their victims is of immense social value and should be utilized. The Investigator’s Dashboard by MultimediaN offers such a high tech contribution and is already - in its first version - used by the police in searching video material that could be strenuous to search.
The Golden Demo shows how the vice squad is supported in its research. A detective can start by taking recordings of the crime scene, and use these to see if there are recordings in the confiscated material that take place on the same location. Subsequently, he can use the semantic filters of the Investigator’s Dashboard to find possibly incriminating image data more quickly. He can subsequently collect more evidence using the system in different ways.
Innovation
The Investigator’s Dashboard is based on the successful MediaMill Semantic Video Search Engine, another Golden Demo by MultimediaN. The Investigator’s Dashboard adds advanced visual search methods and visualizations that support the user optimally in searching large collections of confiscated child porn.
Technology
The system has three important components. The semantic indexing is described in the contribution about MediaMill Semantic Video Search Engine. To relate parts of images, an analogy is made with words in a document. Characteristic elements are the basic words that describe an image and that are compared to other images or video fragments. The visualizations are based on the use of ‘Rapid Visual Serial Presentation’, making it possible to watch a one hour video in only one minute. Moreover, the visualizations are offered in such a way that the user can always explore the dataset in different directions.
Applications
The developed techniques are ready for use in every domain where large quantities of video collections need to be searched. An example of use for the consumer could be a search on the internet.
