Project Professional's Dashboard
The Surveillance Dashboard
The increased aggression in the street and the threat of terrorism has lead to the necessity of camera surveillance at train stations, airports and public areas. It is of great social importance to react proactively to possibly dangerous situations, to quickly be able to judge a situation and take action. Currently, camera surveillance is completely operated by humans. Can intelligent multimedia technologies offer support and contribute to a further improvement of our safety? The Surveillance Dashboard of MultimediaN has proven that it can.
The Golden Demo consists of an interactive system that supports the professional user in monitoring a large number of surveillance cameras, detecting suspicious behavior, and quickly initiating the necessary actions. The basis of the demo is a timeline with detected events and a map of the area under surveillance. The timeline draws the guard's attention to possible suspicious behavior and he can search interactively through all cameras. These cameras can also be selected through the map, which in its turn can be used to locate officers in the street (and in the neighborhood).
Innovation
The Surveillance Dashboard is a demonstrator that produces automatic alerts and that enables users to find persons committing suspicious actions, to follow them through several cameras and to react adequately by alerting the right officer in the street. With the system the guard can browse through time and space.
Technology
The detection step is based on 3D human models that are used to generate every possible human pose. A rule based method is used to interpret the pose as possible suspect behavior. Methods to retrace persons on other cameras are based in features that are invariant to coincidental circumstances such as light or camera angle. And finally, the mobile way of drawing attention works by models of human cognitive capacities, so that the human being can be supported optimally while doing its job.
Applications
The most obvious use of the technology is by the government and administrators of infrastructure, like NS (Dutch Railways). But also businesses are starting to use more cameras to protect their belongings. And what about sports? By analyzing the human movements this way, the Netherlands hopes to win more golden medals in the Olympic Games. The Golden Video On The Move demonstrates how top swimmers are already applying the system.
